I love baseball. In particular, I love Chicago Cubs baseball. I love how long baseball takes. I know, it’s not always exciting…but I’ve had some great conversations in the midst of those games. I love being outside, surrounded by other all cheering for our team. And the thing I love most about Cubs’ baseball is the feeling that there’s the potential for more – always the potential, the hope for more, for greatness.
One of the things that is rarely seen though or talked about though, is all that goes into the making of a great ball club. And one of the areas seldom seeing the light of day so to say, is the minor leagues. Unless you live close to a minor league stadium, the only time you hear about the minors is when a great player is “called up” or an ailing player is “sent down.” I don’t think the minors leagues or players get the credit they deserve sometimes. Perhaps most the time.
Just like the minor leagues, the minor prophets in the Bible don’t get much press time. They are rarely if ever looked at except for a pithy set of verses here or there. But they are rich in history and message. That’s why I’m so excited to spend a season in the minors – prophets that is!
Over the next 8 weeks we are going to look at those understudied, less heard about books and just see what God might teach us in the midst of them! I invite you to join us for the journey! AND…don’t just come and listen, but come and engage. Grab a friend or two or three and make a group. Each week in the bulletin there’ll be resources to help your group process what you’re reading. It’s going to be great and together we’ll all discover a little bit more about the minors! – Jane Jebsen, Missional Pastor
