When I was in high school the choir I sang in met the hour before school – so from 6:15-7:15 a.m. – everyday. It was a little brutal – but I loved being in that choir. My dad, always cheerful the moment he opens his eyes, was my alarm clock. One day, a little fed up with the bright cheeriness of my alarm clock (I am more on the lines of “don’t talk to me until I’ve had a shower, and the day is better when it doesn’t start before 9”), I told my dad I was old enough to get up on my own. I had an alarm clock – I could do it. And I did – for a few days until that one morning when my dad poked his head in my room 10 minutes before I was supposed to be out the door. Yep…my cheery alarm clock came back!
Now whether I truly appreciated my dad’s devotion at the time or not…he made sure I didn’t miss out on something important in my life. Easter, I believe, is our cheery wake-up call from Jesus – hoping to help us not miss something really important in our lives.
And so over the next few weeks, we will be looking at some of those important things Jesus wakes us up to: new life, forgiveness, acceptance and the call on our lives to go! IN the midst of these weeks, we will experience, as well as talk about, the power of life found in Jesus when we wake up to the real life he offers.
The danger we face is this: we think we’re awake when we’re not. Or we’re sort of awake and think that’s all there is to following Jesus. But Jesus wants us to experience the full deal. The life in all its fullness that is ours in him. And hopefully we won’t sleep through it – thinking we know all about it – and miss the incredible gifts that are there for us.
So, come AWAKEN! And join us for the next few weeks and experience once again the power and amazing love of Jesus in your life! – Pastor Jane Jebsen
