White Fang, Laura Ingalls, Charlotte and Wilbur, Anne of Green Gables, Aslan, Lucy, Edmund, Peter and Susan, Irish Red, Old Yeller…these characters and more filled the canvas of my heart as a child as I consumed books. As one who has loved to read from the time I could, there were many nights when a flashlight or the closet light was turned on after my parents left my room. Hours in the car on vacation, summer days, cold wintry days…I used to love standardized test days, because once you were done with the test you could read whatever you wanted!
I love a good story! As I grew older, my love for stories didn’t abate. James Michener, Stephen Lawhead, JK Rowling…these became the authors whose stories I waited for. Stories where I could get lost in another time, another place. Learning some history along the way, getting caught up in lives very different than my own. To this day – when I want to relax, I love a good fiction story!
Even if you’re not a book consumer, most of us love stories – movies, games, audio books, etc – they tell stories. So, isn’t is great that our God, the creator of the best story, has given us so many stories where we can not only get lost in another time and place, but we can also learn more about…well, God?!
The Bible is filled with stories. In fact, the vast majority of the scriptures is story. Story with plot twists and action, stories with fires and kings, miracles and amazing feats…it’s all there!
And this summer, we are going to look at some of those stories – stories with hidden meanings (we know them as parables) and stories of amazing happenings – like dry bones coming to life and men being thrown into a fiery furnace…and living! A dare given – almost a double dare really…and a dare won. These are interesting and exciting stories that help us learn more about the heart of God!
So, join us this summer…and come discover some of the stories, perhaps you’ve never heard! – Pastor Jane Jebsen
