…Soaring! When life’s circumstances are challenging, we often long for an escape … to fly away. Did you know our souls were actually made to “mount up with wings?”
“Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint” (Isaiah 40:28-31).
Hannah Whitall Smith wrote in 1870 in her book “A Christian’s Secret of a Happy Life” about those wings …
“…we might name our wings the wings of Surrender and of Trust. If we will only completely surrender ourselves to the Lord and trust Him perfectly, we will find our souls ‘mounting up with wings as eagles.’”
But, we need to use our wings! The ability to surrender and trust is a daily exercise that enables the wings to grow stronger. Hannah shares “…the wing of trust is entirely disabled by the slightest doubt. Just as it requires two wings to lift a bird into the air, it requires two wings to lift the soul… both wings must be used or no flying is possible.”
When the “If Only’s” seem especially strong (if only I didn’t or if only I could or …), I have learned to rely on the strength of the Lord. It takes capturing thoughts, and to capture thoughts, I need to check in and ask what I’m feeling (in my heart, soul, mind and strength). When I do that, I am able to be real with what is happening for me and take those things to the Lord in prayer. Giving my challenges to him(surrender) and then choosing to trust him to carry them and use them in my life for his glory and my good makes a huge difference!
Let’s cut ourselves free from anxiety and worry, and surrender our lives to God, fully trusting him and, in the process, discover soaring in faith!
